Before You Buy

Choosing A Used Corner Notcher

A sheet metal corner notcher cuts the square out of a sheet corner so the sides fold up into a box without the flanges fouling each other. If you make trays, enclosures, panels or ductwork, it is the machine that decides whether the corners come out clean or get trimmed by hand with a pair of snips. Four numbers separate one notching machine from the next.

  • Notch size. The first figure in the capacity, and the one that matters most. A 220mm machine cuts 220mm in from the corner along each edge. Ours run from 200mm to 300mm. Measure the deepest notch your work needs and buy above it, because a notcher will not reach further than it was built to.
  • Thickness, on mild steel. The second figure. 4mm, 6mm and 10mm are the usual ratings and they are quoted on mild steel. Aluminium goes thicker on the same machine, which is why you will see a capacity written as 220mm x 4mm (6mm alum). Stainless goes the other way and takes roughly a third off.
  • Fixed 90 degrees, or variable angle. Most corner notching is square, and a fixed 90 degree machine is cheaper, simpler and has less to go wrong. A variable angle notcher opens and closes the blades for cones, hoppers and anything that is not a right angle, usually with a dual angle readout. Worth the money only if the work needs it.
  • The blades. Blades are consumable. They regrind, and a square blade has more than one usable edge, but a tired edge leaves a burr and a ragged corner that has to be dressed by hand. It is the first thing to look at on any used notcher and the cheapest thing to put right.
The Options

Types Of Notcher

  • Hydraulic corner notchers. The common machine and the one most shops want. Steady cut, quiet, and the thickness rating holds right up to the full notch. Amada, Boschert, FIM and Comaca all built them and all turn up used in good order.
  • Variable angle notchers. The blades swing, so the machine cuts other angles as well as 90 degrees. For tapered and conical work. Normally hydraulic, and usually fitted with an angle readout so a setting can be repeated.
  • Mechanical notchers. Older, faster on a cycle, and simpler to keep going. Fine for thin gauge and long runs where the notch never changes.
  • Combined corner and edge notchers. Machines that will also cut a plain notch into the middle of an edge. Handy where a panel needs a slot as well as a corner taken out.
