The plant that keeps a workshop running rather than the machines that make the parts: compressors, extraction, lifting and handling. Second hand industrial machinery is where the best value in any factory sits, because used industrial equipment is bought on condition rather than fashion - and condition is something you can stand in front of and check.

• Compressors: air, not horsepower. The number that matters is free air delivered - cfm or litres per minute - at the pressure you actually work at. Add up what your tools need, then add a third. A compressor that cannot keep up is a compressor that never stops.
• Rotary screw or piston. A rotary screw runs continuously, quietly, and suits a shop using air all day. A piston machine is cheaper, noisier and happier working in bursts. Match it to how the air is used, not to the price.
• Receiver and dryer. A tank smooths demand and lets the machine rest. A dryer keeps water out of your lines, your tools and your paint. Both are cheap second hand and expensive to be without.
• Extraction and lifting. Dust and fume extraction is a legal duty as well as a sensible one, and second hand units are a fraction of new. For handling, check the capacity at the height and reach you actually need, not the number on the plate.
