What DD Means
DD stands for Direct Drive. It is the drive type, not a size.
A Truecut DD is a mechanical guillotine where the motor and flywheel drive the crank straight through a gearbox, rather than through a belt and countershaft. What you get is a fast, hard hitting stroke, and next to an older belt driven machine you can feel the difference.
You will see it written several ways. 3.25/2500.DD, 3.25/2000DD, or just Truecut DD. They are the same thing.
The Truecut Range
The machine we sell more of than any other. Mechanical, simple, British built, and still extraordinarily well supported for parts. A motor spins a flywheel and a clutch dumps that energy into one stroke.
Fixed rake, variable blade gap, four cutting edges on both blades on the parallel guided machines, and a wandering foot pedal with a single or continuous cut selector. We hold them in four lengths: 1250mm, 2 metre, 2.5 metre and 3 metre, in capacities from 2.5 mm up to 3.5 mm.
Who It Suits
- General sheet metal work up to about 3.5 mm. Brackets, panels, ducting, trim and repair work. If you are cutting sheet rather than plate, this is the machine.
- Match the bed to your sheet. Steel arrives 2500 x 1250 and 3000 x 1500. A 1250mm bed takes a standard sheet across its width, a 2.5 metre takes it down its full length, and a 3 metre takes the bigger sheet whole. Cutting a sheet twice because the bed is short is the thing people regret.
- Shops that want speed. A direct drive machine hits fast and hard, which over a day of repeat cutting is the difference you notice.
- Buying on blades. Four edges top and bottom means three turns before anything needs grinding. Ask where a machine stands and we will tell you.

SoldMinishear
A compact mechanical guillotine from the same stable, also made as a Minishear DD. Around 1.6 mm over 1270 mm on the machines we see.
Who It Suits
- A shop short of floor space. It does the same job as a Truecut in thin gauge without taking a 3 metre bay to do it in.
- Light gauge work. Ducting, trim, panels and anything that does not need the capacity of the bigger machines.
- A second machine. Keeps short work off the big guillotine so the long bed stays set up.
- The same parts supply. It is an Edwards, so blades, hold-down pads and backgauge parts come from the same UK suppliers as the full size machines.

SoldPedicut & Treadle
Treadle shears, worked by foot, with no motor at all. Edwards made the Pedicut in models 316 and 600.
Who It Suits
- Thin sheet and short runs. Nothing to go wrong, nothing to power, and no waiting for a stroke to come round.
- A workshop without three phase. It needs no supply whatsoever.
- Anyone who wants control of the cut. The blade moves exactly as fast as your foot does, which on delicate work is worth having.
- A machine that will outlive you. There is no motor, no clutch and no hydraulics, so the only things that wear are the blades and the pivots. Plenty of these are eighty years old and still cutting.

SoldVE, VR, GA & GE
This is where Edwards went from sheet metal to plate. Hydraulic, variable rake, and a different class of machine altogether.
The number is the mild steel capacity in millimetres, then the cutting length. So a VE 6.5 x 3100 cuts 6.5 mm over 3100 mm. Some listing sites render that as "6.5 tons", which is wrong. Guillotines are not rated in tonnes.
Who It Suits
- Plate work. VE runs 6.5 and 10 mm, VR runs 5, 6.5, 10 and 13 mm, over lengths to 4080 mm.
- Mixed thicknesses. The V is for variable rake. Drop the rake for thin narrow work where twist matters, raise it when you need the force on plate. A fixed rake machine cannot do both.
- Programmed work. NC backgauges, Swissax on the VE and Cybelec on the VR, with a powered gauge rather than a handwheel.
- A serious foundation. A VE10/3000 weighs around 9,500 kg against roughly 2,000 kg for a Truecut of similar length.

Pearson Hydraulics
Pearson Machine Tool Co of Newcastle built hydraulic guillotines and presses in their own right, and won the Queen's Award for Export Achievement in 1969. Their own models were the 1012, the 4012H swinging beam, the EH and the TX.
Who It Suits
- Heavier plate on a budget. Pearson machines turn up at 10 and 13 mm and usually cost less than the equivalent Edwards badged shear.
- Anyone who wants it built like a bridge. These were export machines and they were made to survive.
- Blade sizes are quoted in imperial, 10 ft and 8 ft, and new blades are still made to those sizes in Sheffield.

Edwards In Detail
Truecut Or VE
| Truecut, Truecut DD | VE, VR, GA, GE | |
|---|---|---|
| Drive | Mechanical, direct drive | Hydraulic |
| Rake | Fixed | Variable, powered |
| Capacity | About 2 to 4 mm | 6.5, 10, 13 mm |
| Length | 1250 to 3700 mm | 2500 to 4080 mm |
| Backgauge | Manual, or simple powered | NC, Swissax or Cybelec |
| Weight | 1400 to 2300 kg | About 9500 kg |
| Suits | Sheet metal shop | Plate fabrication |
A Truecut is the right machine if you are cutting sheet up to about 3.5 mm, you want something simple and fast, and you want parts to be cheap and available.
A VE or VR is the right machine if you are into plate, you need to cut different thicknesses without fighting twist, and you want a programmable backgauge.
Choosing A Drive
- Mechanical. A flywheel stores energy and a clutch releases it into one stroke. Fast, rigid and simple. UK dealers put the practical ceiling at about 4 to 5 mm, and around 3 to 4 mm for a direct drive machine.
- Hydraulic. A motor, pump and cylinder. Slower per stroke but far more controllable, and it takes you all the way up to plate.
- Treadle. Foot power and no motor. Fine for thin sheet and short runs.
One Real Difference
A mechanical machine can be pushed past its rated thickness on a short cut, because the flywheel does not care how long the cut is. That risks chipping the blade. A hydraulic machine will cut to its full capacity at any length.
Guillotine Or Swing Beam
| Guillotine, parallel guided | Swing beam | |
|---|---|---|
| Beam | Straight up and down | Swings through an arc |
| Rake | Variable | Fixed |
| Blade edges | Four top, four bottom | Two top, not interchangeable |
| Twist on the cut piece | Less | More |
The blade economics are the part people miss. Four edges top and bottom means three turns before you need new blades. Two edges on top means one turn on the top blade. Over the life of a machine that is real money.
Rake Angle
The moving blade is set at a slight angle, normally between 0.5 and 2.5 degrees, so the material does not wedge between the blades.
- Low rake puts more blade in contact at once. You get a square, flat edge, but it takes more force.
- High rake works like scissors. Less force needed, but you get a small roll on the top edge and more twist and bow in the cut piece.
Twist is the strip curling into a spiral. Bow is it curling downward. Both are worst on long narrow strips off a high rake machine, and both are exactly what a variable rake machine like a VE or VR is for.
One number that surprises people: three eighths mild steel is only 50 per cent thicker than a quarter inch, but the shear load goes up by 225 per cent at the same rake setting.
Capacity
A guillotine is rated in mild steel, at a tensile strength of around 40 to 45 kg/mm², on a machine in good condition. Change the material and the capacity changes with it.
- Stainless steel. Expect around two thirds of the mild steel rating.
- Aluminium. You can cut more than the rated thickness.
A real Edwards Pearson 6.5 mm machine is advertised as cutting 6 mm mild steel and 4 mm stainless. That is 67 per cent, right on the rule.
The Arithmetic
Capacity scales with the inverse square root of the material's tensile strength: new capacity = √( 45 × rated capacity² ÷ tensile strength )
For a 6 mm machine: aluminium at 25 kg/mm² gives √64.8 = 8 mm. Stainless at 70 kg/mm² gives √23.1 = 4.8 mm.
You will find this formula published elsewhere without the square root. It does not balance that way, because 45 × 36 ÷ 25 comes to 64.8, not 8.
Always confirm against the machine's own plate, and if you will be cutting at full capacity all day, buy a size up.
Blades
- Material. Guillotine blades are made from high carbon, high chrome tool steel. Premium blades run 58 to 62 HRC.
- Edges. A parallel guided machine normally has four edges on both blades. Turn them and you have a fresh edge.
- Turns. Four edges top and bottom gives you three turns. Four bottom and two top gives you three on the bottom and only one on the top.
- Regrinds. A properly looked after blade can be resharpened 15 to 30 times before it needs replacing. UK regrinders quote about a week from collection.
- Blade clearance. The gap between the blades as they pass. Published rules vary between about 5 and 10 per cent of material thickness, and more for stainless. Too tight and the fractured metal has nowhere to go, so you get double cuts. Too wide and you get a heavy burr as the metal is pulled into the gap.
We tell you where a machine's blades stand before you buy it, not after.
